Judge Sets April 2 Trial Date For Omar Guerrero

An April 2 trial date has been set for former Hidalgo County District Clerk Omar Guerrero, who faces six charges involving alleged sexual abuse of minor.

However, attorneys for Guerrero, who is from Mission, said the date set by District Judge Aida Salinas Flores in Edinburg Tuesday, March 6, could change.

The date was set at a hearing during which defense lawyers were expected to ask the judge to reduce Guerrero's $3 million bond. However, that issue never came up.

The district attorney's office was given a March 29 deadline to hand over evidence in the case, including DNA tests which were made to determine if the ex-county clerk had sexual contact with a 15-year-old girl.

Charges include two counts of sexual assault of a child, two counts of indecency with a child, two counts of enticing a child and one count of retaliation involving alleged threats to the child and her family.

However, even if Guerrero is acquitted of these charges, he still faces others, including driving under the influence from a November 2005 incident, a misdemeanor domestic assault case involving his former wife, Karina and threats to kill her, and seizure by Mission police of a large amount of cocaine and marijuana at Guerrero's home.
