$7.4 Million OK'd ForAnzalduas Crossing
The Anzalduas International Crossing will receive $7.4 million in federal funds for construction of inspection and administrative facilities, according to U.S. Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas.
Cornyn said the crossing - a joint project of Mission, McAllen and Hidalgo - will boost economic growth in the Valley and help balance security with legitimate trade and travel.
The funds are being allocated and distributed by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), which will design and build the facilities which will be used by federal inspection agencies.
Cornyn worked with local officials and GSA to secure the funding.
"We continue working to strike an appropriate balance between security and legitimate trade and travel," said Cornyn in announcing the funding. "The new bridge and border facilities will help ease the burden on current points of entry to ensure we achieve that goal."
After meeting all requirements of the federal inspection and regulatory agencies, a U.S. Presidential Permit to construct the bridge and border station was issued in 1999. Construction of the bridge is projected to begin this year, with completion in early 2009.
"Long-term economic growth requires a safe, well-maintained infrastructure," Cornyn said. "I applaud local officials for their efforts to attract these funds. Creating the conditions necessary for growth will help the economy, attract new visitors and business and provide new opportunities for area residents."
