Park Trailer Tax Update 4-5-07

I learned today that H.B. 1928 has cleared the House Ways & Means Committee and should go to the calendar for a House vote. I don’t know a date for the vote yet, but I will keep an eye on it.
Now is the time to register your support of the bill, BEFORE the vote is taken and the bill dies for lack of support.
The House committee report sounds negative however. It says that approval of the bill will reduce tax revenues for the school fund.
We need to counter that by saying it was never the intent of the legislature to tax personal property used for recreational and seasonal use. Also, it is our understanding that there are only two counties in the entire state that are assessing property taxes for travel trailers and park trailers. Those two counties are Hidalgo and Cameron. Rep. Kino Flores, sponsor of H.B. 1928, is from Hidalgo County, and Sen. Eddie Lucio, sponsor of S.B. 841 (the companion bill) is for Cameron County.
If you share this point of view, let these Texas legislatures know. Your phone calls, faxes and emails really do make a significant impact.
