Groundbreaking for Anzalduas Project set

After almost 14 years, dirt will be moved for the Anzalduas Bridge project on Friday, June 29 at 10:30 a.m.

All communities are invited to the event, which is the culmination in over a decade of planning between four cities and two countries. McAllen, Mission, Granjeno and the City of Hidalgo will all be represented at the groundbreaking located at the corner of FM 494 and Stewart.

Invitations to members of Congress and local chambers of commerce, economic development and the elected leadership of the surrounding towns were sent out Tuesday, June 19.

The event is sponsored by the Anzalduas Bridge Board, which is comprised of the mayors of McAllen, Mission, Granjeno and Hidalgo as well as two residents of the City of McAllen. The board is also the governing body of the project.

The project consists of a bridge and outbound facilities. The specific project the groundbreaking is for is the bridge alone. The contract for the bridge has been awarded to Williams Brothers Construction.

As per an agreement between the U.S. and Mexico, the bridge is to be in operation in June 2009. The construction schedule for the Anzalduas Bridge is 22 months. The budget for the bridge alone is $28.5 million.
