Palmview annexes commercial area

One hundred feet north and south of Expressway 83 from Abram to Showers Road is now officially part of Palmview.

The city’s move to annex the mostly commercial area off the expressway is now a done deal and City Manager, Johnn Alaniz, says everybody wins.

"Mainly what is here is commercial businesses," said Alaniz. "A lot of them have been asking for police protection and more police presence. That’s mainly why we’re going out there but also, it will of course increase our revenue."

Although the State Comptroller can’t give definite figures on residual income through sales tax, Alaniz predicts a jump in revenue by anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000.

Although those numbers might scare the new Palmview residents, Alaniz is quick to point out the benefits.

"It will affect city taxes but we’re one of the lowest at 33 cents right now. Now they will have trash, brush, street maintenance and police protection," said Alaniz. "The response has been good. People want more speed limit signs in the area and we’ve fixed a couple of streets. Now what they want is street lights and the city is working to get all street lights changed to solar powered lights."
