Coyote fever beginning to spread

The La Joya Coyotes have surprised not only their opponents with their playoff success, but their fans as well. After a disappointing 3-3 season in district play, the Coyotes came back to upset Laredo United 37-0 in the first playoff round. Last week, La Joya defeated the PSJA Bears, 28-14 in the area round, earning a chance to advance to the next level.

They will be playing the third round of the state football playoffs for the third consecutive year on Saturday, December 1 when they square off against the Converse Judson Rockets who are coming off a 24-16 win over San Antonio Southwest.

The Coyotes, surging after their last win, now must face the very team that humiliated them three years ago by handing them a 43-14 loss in the regional championship game in La Joya in 2004.

However, the excitement of the surprise success of the Coyotes is catching on in and around the area.

Friday afternoon will be a raucous affair as La Joya High School hosts a special pep-rally at 3:45 p.m. to send the team off with the city’s full support.

La Joya will play Judson Saturday at the Laredo Student Activities Center. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
