Sharyland considers implementing JROTC program
In a regularly scheduled meeting of the Sharyland Independent School District (SISD) school board, the board discussed the feasibility of implementing a Junior ROTC program at Sharyland ISD.
Students from 8th to 11th grade were surveyed in regards to their interest in the program. Sharyland had over 600 students express an interest in joining a JROTC program. The minimum number of students to begin an effective program would be 100.
According to a presentation given to the board at the meeting, the startup cost could range from $109,000 to $137,927. In addition there will also be costs to adjust the facilities to meet standards for the program implementation. The resolution was approved by the Board Curriculum Committee one week ago and was approved in the board meeting as well.
The board also considered approval of two competitive sealed bids for B.L. Gray. One was for the school tennis courts. The district received only one competitive sealed bid for the project. The bid price is $246,240. The other bid concerned landscaping that would cost the district $350,000.
The board also took time to recognize Jennifer Rodriguez from Jensen Elementary who was selected as the Rising Star Gifted and Talented (GT) Teacher of the Year for Region One as well as Rebecca Salinas who was selected as the Region One GT Teacher of the Year. These teachers were nominated by their campus and competed against other Region One teachers. Patty Rendon, GT Specialist at Region One presented them with a plaque.
