SISD board member announces re-election bid
Juan F. Zuniga has announced he will seek re-election on the Sharyland Independent School District Board of Trustees in the May 10 election.
Zuniga has served three years on the board and is pre-sently the secretary of the board. He has lived in the district for over 38 years and is a 1985 Sharyland High School graduate.
During his first term, the Sharyland North Junior High and Donna Wernecke and Harry Shimotsu elementaries were opened on time and under budget and the new B.L Gray Junior High is on schedule to open for the 2008-2009 school year. He credited the superintendent and his administration for much of the success in opening these campuses.
This fiscal year Zuniga supported the reduction of the tax rate by an additional five cents below the state required reduction. "Due to the tremendous commercial and residential growth in the district I will continue to support tax decreases as those opportunities make themselves available. The new growth has facilitated the district’s fund balance to increase to well over $19 million dollars."
He indicated that he will continue to dedicate 100 percent of his effort to provide all students with every opportunity to be successful and will strongly support future increases for all faculty and staff.
Zuniga is currently the city manager of Rio Grande City and has over 18 years of experience in the municipal government field. He is a former municipal judge and state magistrate. He is a past board member of the National Society of Hispanic MBA’s and is currently a board member for the South Texas Aggregation Project (STAP).
Zuniga holds a bachelor of arts and master of business administration degrees from the University of Texas-Pan American. He is married to
Maria Del Pilar and they have two children, Christopher is a sophomore at Sharyland High School and Juan F. Zuniga II is a 3rd grader at Martinez Elementary.
Zuniga has been a strong advocate for all students, parents and faculty and further pledges to continue to maintain the Sharyland traditions that have made the Sharyland School District one of the best districts in the state of Texas.
