Police chase ends in crash
No serious injuries were reported after a police chase Wednesday morning resulted in a mother and her two young children veering into a canal on Stewart Road just north of 495 in Mission.
When a man driving a truck ran a red light Mission police began a chase on westbound FM 495 after the vehicle refused to pull over before swerving onto a canal bank headed toward Stewart Road. As the vehicle crossed Stewart it collided with an SUV forcing it into the canal. A Mission police officer dove into the canal and, with the help of a passerby, pulled the woman and her two children to safety.
After the accident Mission police, along with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Border Patrol, found 22 illegal immigrants including the man believed to be behind the wheel of the truck.
Two nearby schools were put on lockdown throughout the morning as police tracked down the fleeing immigrants.
