First class postage rates rising
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced that postage rates for standard first class letters will be going up from the current 41 cents to 42 cents beginning May 12.
Standard mail, periodicals, package services and special service postage will also be increasing.
Although the first class mail stamp will be 42 cents after May 12, consumers will still be able to use the Forever Stamps they purchased prior to May 12 after the price change. Forever Stamps are widely available through post offices, contract postal units, consignment locations and automated postage centers as well as at the Postal Store.
A 62 cent stamp will also be available shortly after May 12 for one ounce nonmachinable first class mail letters such as square greeting cards.
USPS has released a statement saying that consistent with the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act they will be adjusting their mailing services prices each May. By law, these prices can increase on average no more than the rate of inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index.
