SISD swears in new board members
In a special called meeting of the Sharyland Independent School District (SISD) the final votes were canvassed and a new board member was sworn in following this year’s election.
Newcomer Ricky Longoria, who collected the most votes with 1,241 out of a total of 3,187 and Juan F. Zuniga who garnered 1,014 assumed their places at the front of the boardroom. Mario Lizcano, the third candidate, received 932 votes.
Longoria made mention of how he will approach his new duties in his acceptance remarks.
"I accept the position not on behalf of myself but all the family and friends who helped with this process which started 60 days ago," said Longoria. "It has always been about family and friends and that is the frame of mind I will have as we move forward."
Zuniga promised to maintain the principles he believes makes the district strong.
"This year the candidates were equally strong. It was a much tougher race," said Zuniga. "I will continue to support the tradition and culture here."
Outgoing school board president Paul Rodriguez was recognized by the board and congratulated his peers on a successful year.
"I want to say one last time to the board thank you for your assistance and cooperation," said Rodriguez. "This will go down in the records as a successful year for Sharyland. Thank you very much."
The new board then set about the task of reorganization with Fernando Ramirez being quickly elected president by a 4-3 vote.
Guillermo Reyna was elected vice president unanimously.
