Penitas boy hit by school bus

A 7-year-old boy was struck and injured by a La Joya ISD school bus Wednesday morning at about 7 a.m.

According to the district’s police chief, Raul Gonzalez, the young boy was waiting for the school bus in front of his home, located on Mesquite Street south of Expressway 83. Apparently, the boy ran in front of the bus when he was struck, suffering serious head injuries.

He was transported to a hospital and then transferred to Rio Grande Regional Hospital. He was in critical condition as of Thursday morning.

No one else was injured in the incident, although the bus driver was visibly shaken by the accident. He was very worried about the injured student, the police chief said. District policy requires that the driver undergo mandatory drug testing following the accident.

Gonzalez said the driver will likely be temporarily reassigned while the incident is under investigation. No charges have been filed

School counselors were made available to talk to the other students. The district police department plans to continue investigation of the accident.
