May 9 – The La Joya Senior Citizens Center is hosting a Mother’s Day celebration from 11:30 to 3 p.m. The activities will include a program, music, refreshments and drawings for prizes. The Center is located at 920 S. Leo Street. Call 585-7672 for further information.
May 10 – Mail customers from Brownsville to Roma may participate in the National Association of Letter Carriers Annual Food Drive by leaving a bag of groceries by the mailbox. A collection site is planned for the United States Post Office at 620 East Pecan Boulevard, McAllen. Mail carriers will collect them and a donation will be made to the Food Bank RGV. May 11 – It’s time to "Treat Mom to a Symphony" with the South Texas Youth Symphony performing in a special Mother’s Day concert at 4 p.m. in the Fine Arts auditorium on the campus of the University of Texas-Pan American. Mothers have free admission if attending with another paying guest. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, students, and seniors. May 16 – The last Music Afterhours Outdoor Concert of the season will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the east reflection pool of the McAllen Convention Center. This month’s performers are the Kim Snyder Trio (folk rock, acoustic, jazz), Single Fin (surf, trip hop, blues), and They Mean Us (progressive, indie, rock). Concerts will resume next October. Seating is limited. Bring a blanket and a picnic lunch to enjoy the performance. In the event of rain, the concert will be staged at McA2 Creative Incubator, 1001 16th St., McAllen. May 17 - Parents and kids can take time to stop and smell the flowers from 2 to 4 p.m. during the Family Nature Day at Quinta Mazatlan. Families are invited to decorate their own pot to plant a seed and learn about how plants grow while walking along the woodland trails. May 17 – The Boys and Girls Clubs of Mission, located at 209 W. 18th St., will host a rummage sale in their parking lot beginning at 8 a.m. They are seeking donations for the sale. Call 585-3606 for more information.
May 20 – The Diabetes Support Group at Mission Regional Medical Center will meet at 7 p.m. in Meeting Rooms A&B of the first floor cafeteria. This month’s topic is "Kidneys." Parking is permitted in the west parking lot for the meeting, and healthy snacks will be served. The group is for diabetics and their families.
May 23 – The Mission Housing Authority Health Fair will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at 810 Mayberry, Mission. Free health care exams will be offered and information on area medical services will be available from the Area Agency on Aging, Silver Ribbon Community Partners, Food Stamp Outreach, Women Together, and various private companies. There will be music, refreshments, and door prizes. Call 631-7913 for further information.
May 24 – The Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley will host a "Ride Against Hunger" bike tour. Riders may choose from 25, 45, or 60 miles to ride. The tour begins at Edinburg Municipal Park at South Raul Longoria and Sprague in Edinburg. Cost is $25 per person to participate. Sponsorships are still available and all proceeds go to the Food Bank. Online registration is available at www.foodbankrgv.com.
