EDINBURG – Ciclistas Urbanos (CU) will host the first “Spooks and Spokes Ghost Tour of Edinburg.” This will be a night-ride bike tour of haunted sites in Edinburg, including local cemeteries, a haunted school, the jail, the old theater and more. The free ride will take place Saturday, Oct. 22, starting at 7 p.m. at the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce “Depot” located on 602 West University Drive and ends at the Monster Carwash, 2702 W. University Drive, for a “Monster Mash.”

At each haunted site along the tour, a cyclist will share their tale and personal encounter with the unexplainable. Ride length will be 10 miles.

The South Texas Indian Dancers announced their 22nd Annual South Texas Pow Wow will be held Oct. 21-22 at the Lark Community Center, 2601 Lark Ave., McAllen. The event begins at 7 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday with activities running into the evening.

The celebration includes Indian storytellers, drawings, music, dancing and vendors selling American Indian jewelry, dream catchers and more. Admission is free. Call 686-6696 for more information.

Actor Uzziel Martinez from Los Angeles, CA will be attending the event. Mother-daughter singing duo “Sayani,” Cherokees Jorie and Christine West from Springtown, will perform, along with storyteller Cherokee Kathy Lynn of Port Lavaca.

There will be exhibition performances by the South Texas Indian Dancers (STIDA), and some dances will be opened to the audience for participation. The Friday Fun Dance is 7-10 p.m. The Saturday Exhibition Dance begins at 11 a.m., Gourd Dancing is 1-4:30 p.m., and the Grand Entry begins at 7 p.m.

Legendary Southern rockers ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd are bringing their tour, “Rebels and Bandoleros,” to the State Farm Arena on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m.

The University of Texas-Pan American is celebrating its 10th anniversary Sept. 26-Oct. 1 of educating Hispanic youth about the many opportunities available to them in the STEM careers. UTPA and U.S. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) started the weeklong conference to encourage Hispanic students in the Rio Grande Valley to pursue STEM-related careers, since employees in those fields are in high demand.

Mariel Robles wants girls to know that engineering is not just about fixing or designing cars. It also is an industry that needs their input.

"We lack the female perspective in science and innovation," said Robles, a 2006 UTPA graduate who earned a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering. "Everything is designed by men for men."
