20110624-Willie-Nelson-PhotoMISSION – Willie Nelson’s Country Throwdown Tour will be hitting Las Palmas Race Park on June 30 with eight top country acts and six emerging singer/songwriters. Doors will open at 2 p.m.

The concert will feature the Bluebird Café Stage, a side stage and the main stage.

The Bluebird Café Stage will feature Austin Lucas, Brent Cobb, Dani Flowers, Adam Hood, Erin Enderlin and Caitlyn Smith.

Music Festival to Feature Hot Headliners and Hit-Making Singer/Songwriters

The only tour of its kind in the world of country music, Willie Nelson’s Country Throwdown Tour 2011 features eight headliners, including Willie Nelson, Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser, Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert, Craig Campbell, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real. Recently added to the tour, Drake White, is sure to entertain with his signature freestyle twist on original songs, ad-libs and audience participation antics.

PHS accordion player competes at Accordion Kings and Queens Festival

ENT_omar-garzaAUSTIN – Folklife’s 22nd annual Accordion Kings and Queens Festival will be another chance to dance the night away to accordion greats playing conjunto, zydeco, and polka in Houston. This year’s Festival will feature Brave Combo, Corey Ledet and Mickey y sus Carnalez, as well as the finale to The Big Squeeze contest. Popular Texas journalist Joe Nick Patoski will again emcee the star-studded affair on Saturday, June 4, at 6 p.m. and it is free and open to the public.

Festival goers wanting seats in the pavilion area can pick up their free tickets the day of the festival at the Miller Box Office or become members of Texas Folklife and receive up to four reserved tickets. Fans should plan to “scoot their boots” because the night promises to be a squeezebox extravaganza.

Free summer outdoor concert series coming to McAllen

MCALLEN — Beginning on June 10, the McAllen Convention Center Oval Park will be host to a series of free, family-friendly, outdoor, music and arts events, ending on Aug. 12. The Muve Music Summer Concert Series, sponsored by the new Muve Music service from Cricket, will feature over 50 acts performing on three stages from 5 until 11 p.m. every second Friday of the month. This community oriented event will encourage attendees to bring blankets, chairs, their pets, children, and “three friends” to experience multiple genres of music, art, and live performance in a relaxing and comfortable environment. No coolers will be allowed.

Basilica starts this week

BasilicaCastBWFrom the team that brought you Cruzando, brings you Basilica, a new play by Mando Alvarado, directed by Michael Ray Escamilla. The developmental production will have its South Texas premiere: May 12 to May 29, at STC’s Cooper Center for Communication Arts.

Basilica follows the story of the Garza family from San Juan, Texas. They are a nice working class family. And like every church going family, they strive to be the best they can be. But when Gilbert Gonzalez returns as the new Pastor for the Basilica, everyone will be confronted with who they really are and true redemption will escape all but one.
