San Benito celebrates Texas Independence

20110218_ENT_SanBenito_TexasIndependenceSAN BENITO – The sounds of firing muskets and cannon blasts will fill the atmosphere when San Benito hosts its Third Annual Texas Independence Day Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 26. Battle skirmishes, reenacted by living historians, will culminate with the Battle of the Alamo in honor of the 175th anniversary of Texas’ Independence.

Grammy winner Michael Salgado to perform at McAllen event

ENT_Michael-SalgadoOn Saturday, Feb. 19, the City of McAllen and the McAllen Chamber of Commerce will host a Mexican Sister City Event at the McAllen Convention Center. It will be hosted at the McAllen Convention Center Exhibit Hall B at 1 p.m.

The event is part of the City’s Centennial celebrations planned for this year. Mexican officials and their delegations will bring top tier performers for the community to enjoy.

Rio Grande Valley Music Festival coming Feb. 15-20

The seventh annual Rio Grande Valley Music Festival will be held Tuesday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 20. The festival will be held at the RGV Livestock Showgrounds, 1000 N. Texas Ave. in Mercedes

This non-profit event is organized each year by music professionals and Winter Texans who donate their time for supporting music education programs for youth in the Rio Grande Valley school districts. Approximately $13,000 was donated in 2010, according to festival organizers.

Record store celebrates anniversary, vinyl

Rumors-and-Headlines_SurgeMcALLEN — Orlie Ozuna loves vinyl. After 10 years of collecting vinyl records, and with the help of a friend, Ozuna opened Fall Back Records, which celebrates its one-year anniversary on Feb. 5.

“I had developed a mild addiction to it and I just assumed if I liked it so much, there had to be enough people out there that could make this idea a success,” the McAllen resident said about opening his business.

Goldwing Express is hot new show in Valley

Goldwing-Express_DSC_0057One of the hottest new bluegrass/gospel/country music/comedy groups in the Rio Grande Valley is Goldwing Express, a former Branson show that is taking the Valley by storm.

With a packed tour schedule of performances all across the Valley, this ensemble performed Friday at the Border Theater in Mission, where we caught one of their shows.
