Premiere of ‘Down for Life’ this weekend in the Valley

P1000495‘Down for Life’ lead Jessica Romero, director Alan Jacobs and producer Frank Aragon were present at a VIP reception held Jan. 13 at De Mor Banquet Center in McAllen. Also in attendance were Richard Cortez, mayor of McAllen; John David Franz, mayor of Hidalgo; and Judge Rudy Gonzalez.

The movie is premiering in the Valley this weekend.

Lady Matador Lupita Lopez stars in opening bullfight

Lupita_rodillasPSLady Matador Lupita Lopez will return Sunday, Jan. 23, as the world-class bloodless bullfights at the Santa Maria Bullring will begin the new season. Lopez was the triumphant woman matador of the 2010 bullfights, drawing great favor with the crowds.

Since its beginning 11 years ago, the Santa Maria Bull Ring in La Gloria has been growing in popularity attracting more and more fans to the sport each year. The Santa Maria Bull Ring offers winter visitors an opportunity to get a little taste of the Hispanic culture. The major difference in a Mexican bullfight and an American one is that bullfighters are not allowed to kill the bull.

Pat Green returns to the Las Palmas to promote new album

New Year’s Eve Celebrations

20101231_New-YearsDowntown McAllen will have their citywide celebration in downtown McAllen. Food and novelty booths will be located on 16th St, just north of Beaumont Ave. A children’s corner will be set up at 12th and Broadway.

Confirmed bands that will be performing are the Marshall Law Band at 8:50 p.m., Chris Rivera Band at 7:55 p.m., In-N-Out at 9:45 p.m., Highway 7 at 7 p.m., and Frijoles Romanticos at 10:40 p.m. The stage for the bands will be set up at 15th and Beaumont, next to the downtown parking garage.

Eli Young Band performs Dec. 29 at Las Palmas

EliYoungBand_PopThe Eli Young Band will be performing at Las Palmas Race Park in Mission on Dec. 29. The band has come a long way in their 10 short years together from performing gigs in college to having their own YouTube Channel.

Mike Eli, James Young, Jon Jones and Chris Thompson met while attending the University of North Texas in 1998 and 1999. The foursome were brought up surrounded by music and had high school bands. In college, they realized they all had music in common and started playing together. The group even included a couple of songwriters.
