Works of Belgian artist Hugo De Clercq on display at IMAS

imas-logoMcALLEN - The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) opened its most recent exhibit last night:  “Hugo De Clercq: Works of the 1970s.”

This Belgian Constructivist artist has made important contributions to the development of post-war art in Europe.  Hugo De Clercq’s (Ghent, Belgium; 1930-1996) career has been defined by the idea of search for the form and its characteristics.  De Clercq’s quest for form in the 1960s and 1970s led him to a deeper and different approach of the concept of media. His approach left no technique left untouched: painting, drawing, sculpting, and printmaking while eliminating color and the figurative subject matter.

De Clercq’s work has been exhibited in Belgium, France, Germany, the former country of Yugoslavia, Japan, Uruguay, Mexico, the Netherlands and the United States.  His art belongs to the private collections of the Belgian government, Museum of the Arts Ghent, Nederlandse Kunststichting, and Musée George Pompidou Paris, to name a few.

JDA readies for ‘Glitz and Glamour’ fundraiser Nov. 2

20131018 Juan-Diego-Academy-GALAJuan Diego Academy, the Valley’s newest Catholic high school, is hosting their third annual gala, “A Night of Glitz and Glamour,” on Saturday, Nov. 2. It’s taking place at the JDA campus located at 5208 South FM 494, which is on the grounds of the old Novitiate south of Mission. The reception begins at 6 p.m., with the dinner following at 7 p.m.

A major fundraiser for the school, proceeds will be used to build more classrooms for the campus. The fledgling high school is now in its third year, also. It began with a freshman class of 19 students—now 21— and, each year, a new class has been added. JDA now has 77 students in three grade levels. In 2015, that first group of ninth graders becomes the first graduating class.

The Junior Class will perform a “Roaring 20s” dance as part of the evening’s entertainment, and a saxophonist will provide music throughout the dinner hour. A DJ and a jazz band round out the rest of the musical program.

20131011 UVALAction 7The public is invited to the Upper Valley Art League’s 2013 All Members’ Exhibit. This year’s event is being combined with the Mission Chamber of Commerce’s monthly business mixer. It begins at 7 p.m. in the UVAL gallery at 921 E. 12th St. in Mission in an evening to bring the public, the artists and business professionals together to meet, greet and shop in a relaxed, social setting.

Their varied works will cover a wide range of mediums, including sculpture, watercolor, photography, acrylic, decorative art, oil, ceramic and fiber art.

The exhibit also offers an opportunity when the artists will be present to answer questions and explain the creative processes behind their works. Their works will continue to be displayed at the gallery through Nov. 5 and can be viewed during regular gallery hours.

‘Quantics’ exhibit by sculptor Sebastian opens Oct. 10

20131004 Sebastian-Ben-Martinez-Dr-Jose-YacamanMcALLEN – The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) will present their latest exhibit “Quantics: The Art & Science of Sebastian” with an opening reception on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 6 p.m. The exhibit will be on display through March 2, 2014.

In this exhibit the world-renowned sculptor Enrique Carbajal, better known as Sebastian, explores the worlds of quantum physics and nano particles, and combines them with his love for clean and geometric aesthetics.

“Quantics” is more than just an art exhibition. It transcends the museum’s interactive Discovery Pavilion, the Science On a Sphere Theatre, the museum grounds, and the streets of McAllen; thus, demonstrating the fusion between art and science and their dependency on one another for inspiration.
