Who's in the mood for just hanging out and listening to music while having the chance to see a variety of art from local artists? That’s what visitors will have a chance to do at The World’s Smallest Art Fair at the Art Walk in McAllen this Friday.

Studio owner Marco Valdez has taken the suggestions of the young movers and shakers of the McAllen Arts District and is answering their prayers. In a refreshing twist on the Art Walk, he has organized The World’s Smallest Art Fair, an event that will start with the March Art Walk.

Every year BorderFest provides different music, entertainment and food from a country or a culture to celebrate and learn more about. The event will be held starting Thursday, March 3 through Sunday, March 6. Headliners include Janet Jackson on March 3 and Selena Gomez on March 5.

The 8^th Annual “Smokin’ on the Rio” Texas State Championship BBQ Cook-off will be held next weekend, Friday, Feb. 25 and Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Livestock Show Grounds in Mercedes. The event kicks off with live entertainment on Friday night and gates opening at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Friday night will feature live entertainment from classic rock bands Par Three, Midlife Crisis and No Drama. The first band will take the stage at 7 p.m. A Pan de Campo and Carne Guisada Jackpot will be held as well with judging starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday night events are free.

SAN BENITO – The sounds of firing muskets and cannon blasts will fill the atmosphere when San Benito hosts its Third Annual Texas Independence Day Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 26. Battle skirmishes, reenacted by living historians, will culminate with the Battle of the Alamo in honor of the 175th anniversary of Texas’ Independence.
