McALLEN — Years ago, the Lipan Apache Indians were among the Native American tribes that roamed the area. Today, the Apache culture is being preserved by the South Texas Indian Dancers with their sponsor Robert Soto, a descendant of the Lipan Apache Indians.

The South Texas Indian Dancers will hold their 21st annual South Texas (Way South) Pow Wow on Oct. 22-23, at the Lark Library Community Center, 2601 Lark Ave. in McAllen. The public is invited to witness the Indians in their native costumes dancing traditional dances. The event starts tonight at 7 p.m. with a Grand Entry fun dance.

On Saturday doors will open at 10 a.m. with an exhibition dance starting at 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. From 1 to 4:40 p.m. gourd dancing will take place, and at 7 p.m. the main event Grand Entry will take place.

Cakewalks, raffles, sales of American Indian jewelry and Indian crafts such as dream catchers will be part of the activities. Admission is free.

Those participating in the Grand Entry on Saturday include Southern Drum, South Wind; Northern Drum, Carlos (Ponca) Gonzalez; Head Man Dancer, Trey Adams (Lipan Apache) of Odessa; Head Lady Dancer, Marion Highfill (Cherokee/Hawaiian), of Houston; and Head Gourd Dancer, Emiliano Flores, San Antonio. Gary Kodaseet (Kiowa) of Oklahoma City will act as master of ceremonies. Bob Woolery (Cherokee/Osage) of Sedalia, Missouri will be arena director.

Special appearances include “Sayani”- singers, Jodi and Christina West (Cherokee) of Springtown, Texas; Uzziel Martinez, actor, of Los Angeles, California; and Kathy Lynn (Cherokee) of Port Lavaca, Texas. Andrea Wendling is serving as the 2010 South Texas Indian Dancers Princess.
