With their Houston roots, ZZ Top is sometimes referred to as "That Little Ol' Band from Texas." Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard came together in 1969 and soon began developing a following in Texas with their blues-based boogie rock. It was their 1983 release of Eliminator that brought the band to the forefront when it sold 10 million copies. After 40 years of touring together, the same members continue to perform and record music together. Worldwide, they have sold more than 50 million albums, scored eight Top 40 hits and won three MTV Video Music Awards. They were inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
Today’s Lynyrd Skynyrd band is a 1987 reformation of the original 1964 band which went through a series of tragic losses of band members due to a 1977 plane crash and natural causes. When the band took a hiatus in 1977, some members continued their music careers with other bands. But, in 1987, five members of the pre-crash band came together for a tour. Meant to be a one-time tribute, the tour brought the band to a new life. Of the original members, only Gary Rossington continues with the band to date. Throughout the tragedies, the triumph has been the band’s style and appeal. From the original band’s breakthrough hit single, Sweet Home Alabama, to the 2009 release of today’s band’s Gods and Guns album, Lynyrd Skynyrd has survived it all and kept their audience. Recognitions have included being listed in the 2004 Rolling Stone and 2007 VH1 “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
