New Year’s Eve Celebrations

20101231_New-YearsDowntown McAllen will have their citywide celebration in downtown McAllen. Food and novelty booths will be located on 16th St, just north of Beaumont Ave. A children’s corner will be set up at 12th and Broadway.

Confirmed bands that will be performing are the Marshall Law Band at 8:50 p.m., Chris Rivera Band at 7:55 p.m., In-N-Out at 9:45 p.m., Highway 7 at 7 p.m., and Frijoles Romanticos at 10:40 p.m. The stage for the bands will be set up at 15th and Beaumont, next to the downtown parking garage.

There will be two parking locations for attendees interested in parking and receiving a ride to the downtown event. One location will be the McAllen Civic Center on 10th St. and Expressway 83, and the other location is the McAllen Convention Center on Ware and Expressway 83. Transportation is free.

The park and rides will begin at 6 p.m. and will run until 4 a.m. Jan. 1. Shuttles will depart every five minutes. Those using the shuttle service at the Civic Center will be dropped off at Beaumont and Bus. 83. The McAllen Civic Center shuttles will drop riders off at Bicentennial and Beaumont. Passengers should board shuttles at the same location they are dropped off at.

A confetti and laser light show will light up the sky over downtown McAllen. The show will last for 30 minutes and will be synchronized to music. Red Hot Chili Peppers version of Auld Lang Syne will kick the show off.

The festivities begin at 7 p.m. and run to 1 a.m. Jan. 1. The New Year’s Eve Ball will be dropped at the stroke of midnight.

Many venues in the downtown area will have specials, live entertainment and dancing including Level, Roosevelt’s at 7, Thirsty Monkey and NV.

South Padre Island will celebrate the New Year with a fireworks display at midnight over the Laguna Madre Bay. The ideal viewing will be from Haas to Whiting Streets.

On Jan. 1, The 13th Annual Polar Bear Dip will take place at noon. Registration starts at 10 a.m. at Boomerang Billy’s Beach/Surf Motel at South Padre Island. The event is free and t-shirts are available for purchase. Call 1-800-767-2373 for more information.
