No South Texas football team has seen a Texas State Championship since 1961. That was when Head Coach Earl Scott and Asst. Coach Bennie La Prade took an unlikely group of 17 players from the small town of Donna to win the coveted goal of all high school football teams. Miracle at Donna tells the story in its premier at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo on Thursday, Feb. 2, at 8 p.m.
A Frank Aragon film, the American sports documentary tells the story of how 10 Hispanic and seven Anglo youth became legends with their coaches among the Valley community. Scott and La Prade didn’t see the “differences,” but focused on the “team” and their strengths to achieve the perceived “impossible.” The community, in true Valley spirit, rallied behind their boys. Racial barriers came down, and dreams were realized. A community learned and set an example for their posterity that “miracles” are only determined beads of sweat and hard work away from reality.
The full package red carpet movie premier dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $1,000. The red carpet cocktail reception package begins at 7 p.m. with tickets at $500. The movie follows at 8 p.m. General admission tickets to the movie only are $20.
