20120302_DRALIONCirque due Soleil makes another appearance at State Farm Arena on March 14 through 18.  This time they are bringing their signature production “Dralion”™ to the Valley.

The troupe’s dramatic aerial dances and floor work promise an evening of drama featuring 50 international acrobats, gymnasts, musicians and singers.  The name is derived from the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West.

The strength and agility of Cirque performers takes on the feel of a ballet with the aerial hoop and the Pas de Deux, an intertwined couple as they fly over the stage held aloft by a band of cloth.  The action never stops as the evening flows with the Bamboo Poles, Dralion dragon and lion dances, hand balancing, and hoop diving.

Skipping ropes takes on a new adult twist of acrobatic prowess, and stylized choreography blends juggling with contortionist flexibility.  Trampolines defy laws of gravity and chairs are no longer for sitting with the skilled gymnastic feats of the Cirque performers.

The rich, colorful costumes and make-up have been influenced by China, India and Africa.  Over 16,000 feet of fabric was used to create almost 1,500 costume pieces to create a dramatic visual spectacle for which Cirque du Soleil has become known.

The entire production is set to a blend of Eastern and Western music blending from India, Andalusia, and Africa with Central and Western Europe.

Performances will be held Wednesday through Saturday, March 14 through 17, at 7:30 p.m., and then at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 and 5 p.m. on Sunday.  Ticket prices range from $40 to $145.  Groups of 12 or more receive a special discount rate by calling 843-5522.  Discounts do not apply on weekend peak events.  Ages 2 and older must have a ticket and special rates apply for children age 2 to 12.

Purchase tickets at the State Farm Arena box office in Hidalgo, selected H-E-B stores, or online at ticketmaster.com or by calling 843-5522 or 1-800-745-3000.
