MERCEDES — Award winning country music vocalist Chris Young headlines tonight, March 9, at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show and Rodeo in Mercedes. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the rodeo arena with opening act Two Tons of Steel.
It’s all part of a line-up of quality entertainment, events and exhibits with that down home feel only the 73rd Annual RGV Livestock Show and Rodeo can give. It’s a great way to spend Spring Break with the family and runs through March 19
Young is the 2012 ACM nominee for Male Vocalist of the Year and Single Record of the Year for “Tomorrow,” and is the current American Country Award winner for Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Single of the Year for “Voices.”

The Livestock Show provides tens of thousands of dollars in prize money and scholarships to hard working 4-H and FFA exhibitors from across Texas. Attracting over 250,000 people annually, it’s manned by 1,000 volunteers, and attracts approximately 3,000 exhibitors.
One of the primary purposes of the Rio Grande Valley Live Stock Show is to educate the young people of the lower Rio Grande Valley in the care, grooming, management, showing and marketing of livestock under the supervision of the 4-H and FFA organizations. Once inside the main gate, head back to the Country Corral next to the rodeo arena where the fun begins with the Lagniappe Productions Gunfight Show featuring authentically 1880s-style costumed cowboys performing audience interactive, comedy gunfight shows per day. Then there’s the Shenaniguns Gun Fight comedy routine where the “Wild West Goes Wack-o” when a quartet of cut-up cowboys fire off a laugh a minute load of one liners, sight gags and cornball comedy.
From deep in the swamps of Florida comes Kachunga, an American bushman dares to step foot into the wet domain of the alligator The Kachunga and the Alligator Show at the Country Corral. It’s man against gator as the bushman pits his strength and agility against nine feet and 300 pounds of lashing tail and gnashing jaws.
On the show grounds, the Chain saw Chicks, female chain saw artisans, will showcase their skills and artistry in carving exotic animals, wildlife, Indian and Western Art.
Both young and older visitors will enjoy the unique, close up experience of petting, feeding and playing with the friendly animals in The Exotic Resort Petting Zoo located north of the Action Spot. That’s also where the Kids Pedal Tractor Pulls Competitions take place for 4- to 12-year-olds compete for free.
Parents, grandparents and kids of all ages enjoy the antics of the Grandpa Cratchet Puppet Show Theater taking place east of the Event Center. Between shows visitors will have an opportunity to interact with Grandpa as he drives around the grounds in his puppet mobile.
Watch the Sinbad high dive spectacular, “In Search of the Golden Pineapple,” as he and his band of Gold Seekers go on the quest to find the fabled Golden Pineapple. It’s a conquest story with pandemonium, daring skills comic high jinks.
“Get Hypnotized” with Erick Känd, stage hypnotist, during the daytime shows in the Action Spot and evening shows in the Event Center. Then stroll the grounds to see if “The Fables of the West,” two cowboys with costume horses come “saddlin’ up” to you.
Watch out for Willy’s Washboard Jamboree bringing musical entertainment to visitors all around the Livestock show grounds. If it toots, whistles or bangs it probably has a place on “Rocko,” Willy’s custom Rhythm Rig he strolls around the grounds.
This year there will be two ranch rodeos starting Saturday, March 10, and Sunday, March 11, and an evening of Xtreme Bull Riding on March 14. Three Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association sanctioned rodeos run consecutively March 15-17, featuring top professional cowboys from across the country competing for prize money towards the national finals held annually in Las Vegas.
Attendees won’t miss any of the action when technology meets the West in the arena courtesy of the high definition scoreboard and instant replay screen.
Add the cherry on top to all around good fun with greased pig scrambles, nightly Mutton Busting, livestock competitions and over 100 rides, games, foods, and attractions.
