20110311_LEG_6373fThe Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show goes into full swing today and runs through March 20. Visitors will be able to see many breeds of cattle, rabbits and other livestock raised by Valley students competing for top prizes and money.

The 11-day event will include rodeos, barrel racing, concerts, live entertainment and exhibits by FFA and 4-H students from across the Valley.

Tonight, a live concert will be held at the rodeo arena at 8:30 p.m. with country music artist Dierks Bentley performing.

Visitors will also be entertained by the Robinson Puppet Theater, Robinson Family Chainsaw Artists and the carnival today.

Daily events and entertainment starting Saturday, March 12, include Fables of the West; Chris Champ, the Whip Guy and Family; Robinson Family Chainsaw Artists; Kids Pedal Tractor Pull; Gypsy Time Travelers; Oscar the Robot; Timberworks Lumberjack Show; Robinson Puppet Theater; United Freestyle Stunt Team; Erick Känd Comedy Hypnosis Show, and Greased Pig Scrambles.

All day events include the Exotic Resort Petting Zoo, 2011 International Auto Show, Planet Agriculture, and the Western Art Show and Photography Contest Display.

A parade, that will begin in downtown Mercedes and travel to the livestock show grounds, will start at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Lil’Miss Cowgirl Contest will be held at 2 p.m. on the second floor of the event center. A NBHA Barrel Racing will be held at the rodeo arena at noon. At 8 p.m., the Whataburger Ranch Rodeo and Mutton’Bustin’ will take place at the rodeo arena.

On Sunday, the Boot Jack Ranch Rodeo and Mutton’ Bustin’ will be held at the rodeo arena at 2 p.m. with Team Penning at 4 p.m.

On Monday, March 14, Youth Team Roping will take place at the rodeo arena at 6 pm.

An Open and Youth Horse Show will take place Tuesday, March 15, at the rodeo arena at 8 a.m. and a show by Andalusian Dancing Horses will take place at 6 p.m.

The PRCA Xtreme Bull Riding will be held at the rodeo arena at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16. Special guest announcer for the event is five-time World Champion Bull Fighter, Rob Smets. Admission to the event is $8.

A Special Kids Rodeo will be held at 2 p.m. at the rodeo arena on Thursday, March 17. At 8 p.m., the PRCA Rodeo will be held with an admission of $8 and includes a calf scramble and some entertainment.

The ‘Are you tough enough to wear pink?’ PRCA Rodeo will be held Friday, March 18, at 8 p.m. at the rodeo arena. Admission for the event is $8.

On Saturday, March 19, a Little Wagon Parade will be held at action spot at 10 a.m. Another evening of PRCA Rodeo will be held at the rodeo arena at 8 p.m. with an admission charge of $8.

Sunday, March 20, features 10 Christian bands performing at the rodeo arena starting at 1 p.m.

Gates open today at 4 p.m. and at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 12 through Sunday, March 20. Gate admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Parking costs an additional $3. A senior citizens’ day will be held on Wednesday, March 16, for seniors 60 and over with admission at $5 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. with special entertainment and prizes from 10 a.m. to noon.

Carnival Midway opens at 4 p.m. today and various times during the livestock show. Prices of armbands vary depending on the day.
