Thriller comes alive in downtown McAllen

Thriller_05

Several events are taking place during Halloween on Oct. 30. The main attraction is happening in downtown McAllen on 17th St., between Chicago and Dallas Ave. Zombies and ghouls will be dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

Four years ago, Jasmine Rico-Garcia started organizing the event for the Valley. She decided a dance party such as this would be more enjoyable and great entertainment. When she found thrilltheworld.com, it became a bigger project with bigger goals in mind. So Jasmine took up the calling to teach anyone that wanted to learn “Thriller” in hopes that someday, she'd have the whole Valley dancing in unison with the rest of the world.

According to thrilltheworld.com, the unofficial count for 2010 is 10,000 participants that will be dancing all across the globe. Locations include Australia, Canada, England, Germany, Scotland, and the United States. In 2008, people from 10 nations performed the “Thriller” dance simultaneously to try to break the world record. The group continues to break the record each year by getting more people across the world to participate in the “Thriller” Dance.

Last year’s McAllen event had almost 50 youth ages 12-18 that participated in the dance. This number does not include adults and children under 12.

This year, thanks to Facebook and email blasts, zombies from all over the Valley will be participating. Participants this year range from eight years old to over 50 years of age. The current count of zombies is over 100.

On Oct. 30, the City of McAllen will see zombies stumbling down 17th Street and gather between Chicago and Dallas Avenues. When the clock strikes midnight, all zombies and other participants will break out into the “Thriller” dance. The public is invited to attend and participate as well. Practices are still being held every evening at 7 p.m. at Las Palmas Sports Club parking lot, 500 Hackberry, McAllen. You can call Jasmine at 454-0064, email her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , or find her and Thrill the World RGV on Facebook.
