20130809 SOC Penitas-Tejanos-8u-baseball-team PENITAS – The Tejanos baseball, a local 08U youth baseball team, dared to dream, work hard, and their efforts paid off when they took second place out of 14 teams in the 8-year-old division at the Disney International Salute to Baseball tournament in July.

Over 150 other teams travelled from across the U.S., Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Aruba, Panama and Venezuela to participate in the tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

The Tejanos are a tournament team which gives them the opportunity to play ball year round across South Texas. This allows them to not be confined by the shorter season play of local leagues and programs sponsored through city parks and recreation departments.

The grassroots experience is a volunteer effort supported through the boys’ hard work, their coaches and parents, and the community. Each year they pick a different major tournament to attend while participating in local tournaments. They raise the funds through chicken barbecues, hosting baseball tournaments, donations from sponsors and the remainder supported by their parents.

Javier Flores, head coach, volunteers his time with the group although he does not have child on the team. Three parents, Alex Guajardo, Daniel Garza and Pedro Solis, serve as assistant coaches.

Some of the boys on the team have been playing together for three years and others for two years. Team members include Esteban Gonzalez, Nathan Perez, Antonio Villareal, Antonio Garza, Alex Guajardo, Oiram Santos, Salvador Hernandez, Pedro Solis, Andrew Nuñez, Joshua Martinez and Esteban Quintanilla.

According to Flores, next year the team plans to go to St. Louis, Mo. to enter the American Amateur Youth Baseball Alliance tournament in St. Louis, Mo.

Highlights from the Disney tournament can be seen on a variety of ESPN platforms such as, the ESPNWWOS YouTube channel and the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex digital network.
