The South Texas Indian Dancers’ 24th Annual South Texas (Way South) Pow Wow gets underway with an opening ceremony tonight at the Lark Library and Community Center, 2601 Lark in McAllen. It’s a two-day event with free admission.
The grand entry begins at 6:30 p.m. with members of the group, from tots to seniors, dressed in the traditional, colorful regalia.
On Saturday, the doors open at 10 a.m., with an exhibition dance beginning at 11 a.m. Gourd dancing goes on from 1 to 4:30 p.m., and the day’s activity concludes with a grand entry at 6:30 p.m. Some of the dancing is open to audience participation. The mother-daughter singing duo, Sayani, will also perform.
In additional to the dancing demonstrations, there will be cake walks and drawings and vendors selling Native American jewelry, dream catchers, arts and crafts, beads, jewelry-making supplies and more.
