MCALLEN — Beginning on June 10, the McAllen Convention Center Oval Park will be host to a series of free, family-friendly, outdoor, music and arts events, ending on Aug. 12. The Muve Music Summer Concert Series, sponsored by the new Muve Music service from Cricket, will feature over 50 acts performing on three stages from 5 until 11 p.m. every second Friday of the month. This community oriented event will encourage attendees to bring blankets, chairs, their pets, children, and “three friends” to experience multiple genres of music, art, and live performance in a relaxing and comfortable environment. No coolers will be allowed.

In this inaugural season of the Muve Music Summer Concert Series the producers of the event strive to provide a relaxing way to take in the best art and entertainment the Valley has to offer while giving a reason for everyone to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. In addition to the live entertainment there will be a vendor and Artisan Marketplace featuring only handcrafted and unique items. This Artisan Marketplace, which usually takes place only during art walk style events, will show off the creativity of the unique culture in the Rio Grande Valley and give the public direct access to the people behind the art.

From country and jazz to blues and rock, the evenings will be filled with local and regional musicians playing familiar and original tunes. There are also a number of local DJs and other types of entertainers slotted-in to keep the format of the night fun and exciting. With over 50 acts scheduled to perform across the season, each night will have a theme and flow to it programmed specifically to coincide with the performers.

“The lineup was built to encourage the exploration of new musical genres, while providing a comfortable feeling throughout the evening” remarks Drew Lentz of the South Texas Community Arts Foundation, the group behind the Summer Concert Series.

Speaking about the bands, Luke Salas, also of the South Texas Community Arts Foundation remarks, “We have such a diverse selection of music in this area; some of whom you’ve heard, others you have only heard of, and even others you have yet to hear. Our goal is to give you a little bit of each, but make it comfortable and entertaining enough to encourage you to come back the next month.”

As a community event, the Muve Music Summer Concert Series is putting forth extra effort to benefit the community. For example, instead of running tens of thousands of handbills to promote the events, posters printed on recycled paper using technology friendly QR codes will be placed in prominent areas throughout the community. Also, in place of regular paper tickets, registration and e-tickets will be used. The approach is aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the events and encouraging all attendees to personally support the effort.

Attendance to the event is free of charge, but registration is requested. To register for the event simply stop by one of the partner registration sites listed on the website, at, or any Cricket store Valley-wide, and look for the registration poster. Registration takes place by scanning the QR code, a mobile-friendly format for linking to a website, on the poster and submitting your information.
