Ten salons will compete for the best hair design at the event. Lluvia Perez, director of Sassy Lady Event Productions, said the team asked the salons to go wild with the hairdo’s, but no one but the salons know what those hairstyles are going to look like until the show begins Saturday night at Ibiza Nightclub.
The salons will be battling it out for the title of “RGV 2011 Hair Battle Winner.”
According to the ACS news release, ACS spends $15,000 a year on wigs for patients that undergo chemotherapy.
“Having a bad hair day can sometimes set the mood for the rest of your day. To some a bad hair day is something to be thankful for,” says ACS.
This is the second year Sassy Lady is holding the event. Last year the event featured several skits. This year the event brings the Venom Dance Team to open the show and other entertainment, including models showcasing wigs, scarves and hats from the ACS.
When asked why do shows like this for fundraising, Perez said there is always a reason to do a show and they have been able to mix entertainment with their shows and draw in a younger and different crowd.
Some people enjoy going to the relays, marathons, walks, and events like the Cattle Baron Ball, but the events we do draw in a different crowd, Perez added.
“We’re trying to bring something different to the table,” said Perez.
Christy Johnson of Imagery Design and the art director for the production company, will also be doing body art at the event.
Johnson did her first fashion show in 2009 to raise money and awareness for the Valley AIDS Council. Now she volunteers her talent and time by doing all the promotional graphic design for Sassy Lady Event Productions.
“These shows are a fantastic way to have fun, promote and introduce great local businesses and most importantly raise money and awareness for many great causes and organizations,” Johnson said about the events they do.
The photographer for the event, Sean Downey, says he has always been involved with community work. While he was in the Marine Corps he helped out with the Special Olympics and while living in California he helped with a number of charities.
“I try to do what I can,” Downey said. “When I can’t give monetary, I feel I can help more doing this. It’s very rewarding and for a worthy cause.”
All three individuals have said the charity work they have done with this production team and with other events has been very rewarding and they have felt more giving by seeing the people that attend the events.
“It’s something good. I think it is something that needs to happen every year,” said Perez. “When you combine something like that, a show with a cause, it’s always a success for all parties involved.”
Perez continued saying that there are so many organizations and non-profits out there that need help that a show can be done for anything.
All the individuals do these shows as purely volunteer work and have fun doing the events as well.
The Battle of the Hair will take place Saturday night at Ibiza Nightclub, 101 S. 17th St., in downtown McAllen. Doors for the event will open at 9 p.m. There will be a $15 entrance fee.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to leave a message or signature on a big poster for a $1 fee.
All proceeds from the event will benefit ACS of the Rio Grande Valley. Two programs that they offer will be benefiting from the proceeds, Look Better … Feel Better and Wigs and Scarves.
Look Good…. Feel Better –Women in active cancer treatment learn ways to restore their self-image and cope with appearance-related side effects. Certified beauty professionals provide free tips on makeup, skin care, nail care and head coverings. This program is in collaboration with the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association and the National Cosmetology Association.
