MISSION — The Sharyland Independent School District is celebrating the holiday season by giving to others. Several elementaries, the high school and Sharyland North Junior High are sponsoring toy and can food drives, concerts and other activities this month.
Shimotsu Elementary is collecting gifts for the Toys for Tots campaign. The student council sponsors the event. They will be collecting toys through Dec. 16. For more information call 956-583-5643.
The Ruben Hinojosa Elementary Student Council has adopted two angels from the Salvation Army this year. They are raising money so they can provide both children their wish list item – a bicycle.
John H. Shary Elementary has an Angel Tree set up at their school so needy children can be adopted and receive a Christmas gift. A Girl Scout troop at the school is also collecting toys for the Toys for Tots campaign.
Lloyd and Dolly Bentsen Elementary is conducting a toy drive for needy families in the area. For more information call 956-668-0426.
The Jessie L. Jensen Student Council is sponsoring a food drive to benefit families in need from Jensen Elementary. The council is having a contest between classes to see which class can bring in the most food. Prizes will be awarded to the top three classes.
Sharyland North Junior High’s student council and honor society recently held a can food drive. All items were donated to the Mission Food Pantry.
Sharyland High School has several organizations that are collecting toys. The school is also doing a toy drive in conjunction with Mission Police Department and donating a Christmas tree to a local family. The National Honor Society at the high school is sponsoring a toy drive to provide Christmas toys to needy children in the community.
The French Club is adopting two angels in the Angel Tree Community project. Contact Linda Freligh at Sharyland High School for more information.
SkillsUSA is hosting a Christmas party for their special population students. The event includes a meal, toys, Santa’s helpers and special gifts for the students. Contact David Cantu, 956-580-5300 ext. 1240, for more information.

Sharyland FCCLA members recently got involved with senior citizens by making stockings and greeting cards. The members delivered the items to Waterford Gardens Assisted Living Home in Mission.
