MCISD board begins superintendent search

MISSION—George McShan, the consultant hired by Mission Consolidated Independent School District to conduct a search for a new school superintendent, made a presentation to the school board Wednesday evening, May 15, outlining the details of his responsibilities. McShan also presented a tentative timeline for the search process, with a deadline of August 1.

Superintendent Dr. Cornelio Gonzalez will be moving to his new position as the executive director for the board of Region One Education Service Center in July. The MCISD board plans to begin the search process immediately, and to sign a contract with a new superintendent before the beginning of the new school year.

Felipe Valencia strikes gold at state meet

2013-Track-State-Championships-Shotput-Felipe-Valencia IMG 0084 featureForty five years ago La Joya High junior Noe Hernandez became the first track and field state champion in La Joya Independent School District (LJISD) history when he ran the 880-yard dash in a time of 1:55.9 to finish just milliseconds ahead of the second place finisher. This past Saturday, La Joya Palmview High junior Felipe Valencia became the second member of LJISD’s exclusive state champions club when he threw the shot put 60 feet 5 1/4 inches to take the gold medal at the state track and field meet in Austin.

Keilah Garcia takes 4th place at state meet today

Keilah fell short of her 140’ 10” throw that earned her second place at regionals two weeks ago.

LJISD, emergency responders conduct drill

20130502 Shooter Drill La Joya lg-03 featurePALMVIEW – Last Thursday, law enforcement and first responders reacted to a simulation of two men shooting at a school at a La Joya Independent School District elementary. The two men went into the school carrying semi-automatic training rifles and handguns and acted out firing at students. A campus officer was taken down in the simulated gunfire as the two men went through the campus, sparing no one in their path.

O’Grady students visit with local dentist

20130419 Dentists-Who-Care CAB 0020 FEATUREMISSION — The Dentists Who Care Mobile Dental Unit paid a visit to O'Grady Elementary last week to take care of some very important students.
Six students received some much needed dental care and gifts.

Dr. Timothy W. Brann examined the students in a 37-foot mobile unit equipped with nearly everything a dentist's office has. The unit has two dental stations, digital panoramic radiology equipment and a computer network.

Actress Marisa Quinn visits Mission High School sophomores

That was the lesson Mission High School sophomores learned last Friday as actress Marisa Quinn, known for her role as Huilen in the Twilight Saga: “Breaking Dawn Part 2,” visited the school as a reward for their efforts on recent exams.
