Volunteers needed for Stamp Out Hunger drive

PHARR – Volunteers are needed for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive this Saturday, May 10. Those interested would be assigned to post offices during the event to help with crowd control, collecting donated products and unloading boxes or bins.

The Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley is partnering with the National Association of Letter Carriers, the Campbell’s Soup Company and the U.S. Postal Service for the drive.

Each year, the communities across the Valley can leave canned goods by their mailboxes for collection by letter carriers on the second Saturday in May. This year,  Omar I. Rodriguez, manager of communications and advocacy, asks that participants leave their canned goods donations in bags or boxes.

It has become the nation’s largest single-day food drive benefitting Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization helping to feed millions of families. Last year, nearly 100,000 pounds were collected in the Valley.

Rodriguez said volunteers are needed not only for the food drive but year round as well. To volunteer contact the Food Bank RGV at 682-8101 to get information on locations and times. For more information about the annual food drive, visit www.helpstampouthunger.com.
