County approves budget amendment policy

As their first order of business, Hidalgo County approved a new budget amendment policy in their Tuesday, Jan. 22, meeting that stated, “Once the county budget has been adopted for the ensuing fiscal year, the County of Hidalgo Commissioner’s Court will not consider any changes to the number of positions and salary paid to each authorized position within a department/office which will have a fiscal impact on the current or future General Fund budgets.

County approves more personnel additions

Several requests for additional personnel and pay increases were considered by the Hidalgo County Commissioners Court during their regular weekly meeting Tuesday. These requests were presented by various county departments long after the budget was approved.

Sheriff dissolves Panama Unit amid investigation

A special task force designed to target narcotics trafficking in Hidalgo County known as the Panama Unit, was dissolved this week according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office. The Panama Unit has been under investigation by the FBI since last August.

Making the case for a new Hidalgo County Courthouse

The inadequacy of the existing Hidalgo County Courthouse has been a topic of discussion with the Commissioners Court for a number of months. The current structure was built in 1954, and since that time, the county’s population has increased by an estimated 476 percent. Its present capacity has not matched the area’s growth challenges.

South Texas Youth Symphony plans Sunday Christmas concert

“If you close your eyes and listen, you will think the Valley Symphony Orchestra is playing. They are that good!” said Cate Link, talking about the South Texas Youth Symphony. Link, who is operations manager for the Valley Symphony Orchestra, said Winter Texans will have an opportunity to hear the Youth Symphony’s Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 4 p.m. at the Edinburg City Auditorium, located at the intersection of 7th and McIntyre.

Festive Holiday Events

Quinta Mazatlan will celebrate Christmas on Thursday, Dec. 13, with a Big Band Concertin the Park featuring the 18-piece Dean Canty Band. Canty is an alumnus of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. As a first trumpet he has played with Bob Hope, Julio Iglesias, Vikki Carr, Jerry Lewis and many others.
