The Leucistic Black-chinned Hummingbird has been sited at the Edinburg World Birding Center. The white hummingbird has been seen feeding on the flowers of the Turks Cap, next to the Interpretive Center between 2 and 5 p.m. daily. First discovered and photographed on Sunday, May 20, by local photographer Mati Lopez, word has spread quickly and images have spread across the internet.

Black-chinned Hummingbirds are one of four hummingbird species commonly found in the Rio Grande Valley, though they are much less abundant than the resident Buff-bellied Hummingbird and migratory Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Black-chinned Hummingbirds are migratory species, spending their summers in the Western U.S. and Canada and their winters in Mexico. However, a few Black-chinned Hummingbirds have been known to winter and breed in South Texas.

South Texas College’s Technology Campus Library presents “Beauty in the Cracks: Photographing Matamoros,” an exhibit featuring black and white photography by Rocío Rangel. The exhibit opens Thursday, June 7, and will be on view through Friday, Aug. 24. Admission is free and open to the public.

The exhibit pays homage to the city of Matamoros, Mexico, where Rangel was born and raised.

Rangel studied biology at The University of Texas at Brownsville, as well as art and photography. She organized a photography club in Matamoros and has coordinated exhibits in the border town, including one at the Instituto Regional de Bellas Artes. Her photographs have been exhibited in various shows at the Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts and at The University of Texas at Brownsville.

MISSION — Trey Ware will deliver his message to the 2012 graduates at the Mission Baccalaureate, honoring graduates from Mission High School, Veterans Memorial High School and Sharyland High School at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, at the V.F. Neuhaus Health and P.E. Center on the Mission High School campus.

Ware is an institution in San Antonio media. A San Antonio native, he began his career 35 years ago at the age of 10 as America’s youngest DJ and is now the host of the popular "Trey Ware Morning Show" on 550 KTSA and KTSA.com

An archery tournament will be held on Saturday, May 12, at the Mission Skeet and Trap Club facilities located on Conway Ave., 1/4-mile south of Expressway 83 adjacent to the Hike and Bike Trail. It begins at 10 a.m.

Medals will be awarded in all divisions and categories for compound, recurve, longbow and for seniors, men, women, youth, cubs and mini-cubs. Participants under 14 years of age must

On Saturday, May 12, Quinta Mazatlan World Birding Center presents, “Amazing Daisy,” part of their Wild Things Day Camp series.

The May 12 program for 5 to 7 year olds is designed to inspire love for plants and gardening by increasing awareness of native wildlife and the close relationship between plants and animals. Participants will study daises growing wild at Quinta Mazatlan, identify plant parts, meet plant pollinators, and prepare a mini garden to grow at home.

Summer and fall semester registration is underway for The University of Texas-Pan American and South Texas College.

The University of Texas-Pan American registration for the Summer I, Summer II and Fall semester registration deadlines are June 5 for Summer I (classes start June 4); July 12 for Summer II (classes start July 11); and Aug. 30 for Fall (classes start Aug. 27).

Alexandria Serna Canizalez, held by her mother Claudia Canizalez, was among the surprised children—and surprised parents—who received a special visit from a few Dallas Cowboys players at the Pediatric Unit of Mission Regional Medical Center last Saturday.

MISSION — Over 5,000 pounds of marijuana were seized in three separate incidents the Mission Police Department and Narcotics Division took part in this week.

Nearly 4,000 pounds of marijuana was seized after MPD received a tip a resident had 2,000 pounds of marijuana in a house. When MPD arrived, they found more than anticipated, police said.
