AUSTIN — On Thursday, the Texas Transportation Commission approved a measure awarding $60 million for the construction of the La Joya regional bypass, a project valued at over $80 million.
The relief route on U.S. Expressway 83 in western Hidalgo County will allow vehicles to bypass the congested highway around the cities and stoplights in and in cities near La Joya.
Originally intended as a tollroad, the contribution of the Texas Transportation Commission means the road will be a free road for all types of vehicles.
“The La Joya bypass will allow for uninterrupted vehicular traffic, especially commercial truck traffic, to travel at highway speeds providing for additional economic opportunities for the community while improving safety for those in the city of La Joya,” said state Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa who announced the approved funding. “I applaud the Transportation Commission for taking the steps necessary to ensure that the infrastructure of South Texas is at the standard we come to expect in this state.”
With the completion of this project, Hinojosa said, the Rio Grande Valley can improve its highway system while continuing to focus on obtaining interstate standards for U.S. Highway 281 as the state begins the conversion process to Interstate 69 designation.
“It is important that we continue expanding the Valley's transportation capability as our region's population and economy continue to grow jobs,” Hinojosa added.
