STC tutoring earns reaccreditation

South Texas College’s Centers for Learning Excellence (CLE), commonly known by students on campus as tutoring centers, recently earned reaccreditation from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), an international organization for tutoring and learning center development, to certify tutors up to a Level III-Master Tutor status, the highest level of certification that can be earned.

“STC’s CLE team has worked very hard to earn this reaccreditation, a process they must go through every five years and means their standards must always be set very high,” said Anahid Petrosian, assistant to the vice president for academic affairs for STC. “It’s an elective process, meaning it’s not something we have to do, but goes back to our college mission of maintaining excellence in everything we do for our students.”

The CLE offers free tutoring to individuals or groups at all six STC campuses. It also provides an extensive schedule of enrichment workshops each semester and access to hundreds of computers district-wide with various instructional software programs for students to use at their convenience.

“Since 2002, STC’s CLEs have been certified at a Level I-Master Tutor status b CRLA and have earned a reputation as a valuable resource to students for assistance with course work and any other academic pursuits,” said Jennifer Knecht, director of STC’s CLEs. “Through this reaccreditation, we have developed and put in place a rigorous review process that all tutors must go through. We also ensure they receive adequate levels of training and hands-on experience helping students. This accolade also means that STC’s CLEs are ranked with some of the best learning centers at the top colleges and universities in the nation and around the globe who share this certification status.”

During Fall 2011 and Spring 2012, the CLE conducted a little more than 48,000 tutoring sessions with students.
