20131101 Fidencio-GuerraFormer and Retired State District Judge Fidencio Guerra Jr. has announced his candidacy for the 275th District Court of Hidalgo County in the upcoming primary elections in 2014.

Guerra stated he is eager and excited to once again be able to serve the citizens of Hidalgo County as one of their judges. Guerra retired from the bench in 2012 after serving 20 years.

The present judge, Juan Partida, told Guerra and several attorneys this would be his last term and he was not going to run again and instead would retire and serve as a visiting judge. Guerra said he was approached by several lawyers who asked him to consider running for the open seat as they were anxious to have him back on the bench. Guerra said he has received positive feedback from many of the lawyers at the courthouse.

Guerra said he has presided over 100 jury trials and has never been reversed in any criminal cases. He also said over the last year and a half while back in private practice, he found out he missed judging. Mandatory retirement is 76 years of age, and he said he has at least 10 more good years of service in him.

He promised to be a full-time judge all day long, five days a week and won’t just warm a bench and collect a paycheck. He will make sure that all court proceedings are properly transcribed by the court reporter and that no case will be removed from the courtroom or the clerk’s office. He also will make sure there are no conflicts of interest with his court’s staff.

Guerra said he will insist on complete transparency of all court proceedings and will remove the reflective tape from the courtroom doors so that the public can observe the court when it is in session. He will hear all of the court’s cases and not send them out to other courts for disposition.

He will set cases on the docket for hearings and will rule promptly on all the pending cases. He is not afraid to rule on tough cases or make difficult decisions. He will assure that all parties that appear before him are afforded their day in court, and that they are treated with dignity and respect.

Guerra also said he is offering his legal experience, his record for fairness, honesty and integrity to the citizens and voters of Hidalgo County and humbly asks for their prayers, support and vote in the upcoming March primary in 2014.
