SOC_throw-a-thon-2011EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Art Department is partnering with the Food Bank RGV to make almost 1,000 one-of-a-kind ceramic bowls for the upcoming annual “Empty Bowls” fundraiser. Volunteer artists and ceramicists are encouraged to come make bowls from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday, July 30, at the Ceramics Lab, Fine Arts Complex at UTPA.

“Not only is this a fun event, but it is a great opportunity to share your talent and/or improve your craft,” said Karen Featherston, Food Bank special events manager.

Water and snacks will be provided for volunteers. Budding ceramicists are encouraged to wear outdoor work clothes that can get dirty. Experienced ceramicists are invited bring their own tools if preferred.

The bowls will be part of the Sept. 22 annual event where local restaurants providing a filling lunch for ticket holders while musicians perform throughout the event. The custom-made ceramic bowls are included with each ticket. A silent auction for donated items, including celebrity autographed platters, will continue until the end of the meal.

The bowls are a reminder of the hunger faced by many throughout the year in the Rio Grande Valley. Tickets for the Sept. 22 event will be available soon on www.foodbankrgv.com.
