Torres heads for Olympic trials

20100820_Isaac_02MISSION – A 20-year-old boxer from Mission has punched his ticket to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials to be held July 31-Aug. 6 in Mobile, AL.

Isaac Torres, who has been boxing since age 9, won the bantamweight division of the Last Chance Qualifier tournament held July 3-8 in Cincinnati, OH. According to usaboxing.org, “Torres claimed the remaining U.S. Olympic Team Trials berth” by defeating Joe Perez (Fountain, CO) by a 28-16 margin to win the bantamweight final round bout.

The Mission boxer won three matches at the Last Chance Qualifier tournament before advancing to the finals match with Perez. He defeated Julian Wyant, (Glenwood, CA), 18-16, in the preliminaries; Patrick Harris (Capitol Heights, MD), 20-17, in the quarterfinals; and Edwin Sandoval (Bakersfield, CA), 22-21, in the semifinals.

Torres said this was literally the last chance for the competing boxers to qualify for the Olympic Trials.

“We qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Mobile, Alabama,” Torres said Monday evening at Mission City Hall where the Mission City Council presented the hometown athlete with a proclamation honoring his achievement.

“We leave Friday,” said Torres, “and the tournament is going to be July 31 to Aug. 6. It’s a whole weeklong, double elimination [tournament]. Only one person makes it to the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England.”

The top eight bantamweight boxers in the nation will faceoff during the Olympic Team Trials next week. And Torres, currently ranked sixth in the country hopes to be the one athlete to win the spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.

“Just one in this weight class makes the Olympic Team for next summer in London,” he said. “We want to bring this back to Mission.”
