Even while the Mission school board is grappling with a projected $8 million budget shortfall, the TEA (Texas Education Agency) hit the school district with more financial troubles last week, demanding the district refund $362,153 in migrant funds.

The City of Mission will host a ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony Wednesday, April 13 at 10:30 a.m. for the new Police Substation and Fire Station No. 5 located at the corner of Glasscock and Military Rd.

MISSION — Mission police arrested a 28-year-old Mission woman on Monday in connection with her husband’s death in a 2010 home invasion.

Vanessa Garcia was charged Wednesday with capital murder. Her husband, Reyes Garcia, died from four gunshot wounds during a home invasion and robbery on June 23, 2010, police said.

Three other suspects were charged in June and one has a warrant for his arrest.

MCISD wrestles budget cut increases

MISSION — As the Mission Consolidated Independent School District continues to make painstaking cuts to its budget, administrators struck board trustees with another blow over the weekend: They’ll have to make bigger cuts.

Initially, over the past few months, administrators estimated the loss of funding to the district would be about $5 million, but after paying closer attention to talks in the House and Senate, that shortfall is now closer to $8 million.

MISSION — To raise money for abused and neglected children, art teacher Isabel Link from Sharyland High School and her art students created artwork that will be donated to a silent auction.

The silent auction is to be held at the Blue Ribbon Fashion Show Gala hosted by the Angels of Love Foundation, a McAllen non-profit organization created to help children who are neglected or abused around the Rio Grande Valley.

Thursday, April 21 has been designated as an early release day for Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) schools. Pre-k students will be released at 10:30 a.m. All other elementary grades will dismiss at 12 p.m. (noon). Junior high schools and high schools will dismiss students at 1 p.m. on this day. Afternoon pre-k students will not attend school on April 21. The early release time for pre-k is needed to allow for proper busing procedures for the elementary schools on the early release day.

Hidalgo County Precinct 3 Constable Lazaro "Larry" Gallardo Jr. poses with his family and Hidalgo County Commissioners at Tuesday's Commissioners' Court where Gallardo was presented with a resolution honoring his 2010 Constable of the Year award with the National Constables Association, which was held last month.
