MISSION — The Sharyland Independent School District is considering revising its early resignation policy to include all contract employees as a way to cut down on expenditures before having to terminate over a dozen probationary educators.

“We have to make some tough choices up ahead to know where we stand,” Superintendent Scott Owings said of possible terminations.

MISSION — The eighth annual Mission Classic Car Show will be held Saturday, Feb. 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Mission Sports Park located in The Grove at Sharyland Plantation. Admission is free and registration is free for show participants.

Set up and sign-in for exhibitors begin at 9 a.m. and cars must be in place by noon to be eligible for $5,000 in cash and prizes, said Mindy Schroeder, show coordinator.

(Austin, TX) -- Another tragic death occurred Tuesday as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Special Agent, Jaime Zapata, was attacked and killed by gunmen at a drug trafficking checkpoint between Monterrey and Mexico City. His partner, Victor Avila, was wounded in the attack and was sent back to the United States.  "Our thoughts and prayers go out to these two brave men and their families for this savage attack," remarked Rep. Peña.

MISSION — Offices for Justices of the Peace Melo Ochoa and Luis Garza are closed for the remainder of the week, following an overnight leak, officials announced Wednesday.

The leak flooded the Precinct 3 Justice Complex at 730 Breyfogle Rd. The offices are tentatively scheduled to open Feb. 22, pending the progress of the cleanup.

The Mission Lions Club will host the first annual PDG Dan Gerlach Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 26, at Shary Municipal Golf Course. Funds raised from the tournament will be dedicated to Texas Lions Camp for children with handicaps or medical conditions. The camp allows children with a wide range of illnesses or conditions to participate in a fun, but challenging camp experience.

MISSION — Days after the community celebrated one of its oldest industries at the Texas Citrus Fiesta, local citrus growers were tending to their trees trying to determine if next year’s crop would be hindered by last week’s big chill.

“We’re very encouraged,” said Texas Citrus Mutual President Ray Prewett on Monday. “Up to this point, we see no real signs of damage.”

While there were reports of ice on trees, Prewett said there was no ice reported inside fruit that would cause damage to the fruit.

MISSION — Myrna Garza got her driver’s license last year, and while she may be confident in her driving skills, her ability to maintain focus on the road is still troublesome.

“I don’t know how people drive with their knees while they eat,” the 17-year-old Sharyland High School junior said. “I almost drove off the road when I was talking to my (driving) instructor. I have to have my whole attention on the vehicle.”

MISSION — Next year’s strict budget cuts have inched their way toward student programs.

Earlier this week, e-mails circulated to Mission Consolidated Independent School district program directors for activities like Future Farmers of America, DECA, Business Professionals of America and Health Occupation Students of America groups that reportedly stated funding for travel to compete this year was nonexistent. Students said they were told to quit practicing and studying because of the lack of funds to send them to compete.
