Sharyland ISD is rolling out the district’s new Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative this week. They plan to start the initiative at the high school and add another campus every three to five school days in phases.

Sharyland Superintendent Virginia Richter said this would make it easier to recognize any issues that might come up such as slow speeds and overloading problems that might arise with an influx of students on their Wifi access.

MISSION— On, Feb. 13, the Mission Consolidated Independent School District Board approved the final plans for the Mission High School field house. Executive Director of Maintenance, Facilities & Construction Ricardo Rivera explained the project was accelerated so the new facility will be ready before football season.

“We are trying to get this project started, that way it will hopefully be completed by next summer and before football season, next year,” Rivera said.

EGV Architects is the company working on the project; the proposed 16,000-foot field house has been designed to include a weight room, treatment room, boys and girls facilities with laundry rooms, and offices.

EDINBURG – A new artisan and a special dance performance have been added to this year’s Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day at the Museum of South Texas History set for Saturday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event features traditional crafts, food, music, and dance from South Texas and Northeastern Mexico. Horse hair braiding, quilting, woodworking, spinning, weaving, and numerous other crafts will again be featured.

MISSION—Members of the community and Mission Consolidated Independent School District joined together last Saturday to celebrate the dedication of the MCISD Agriculture Science Lab in honor of Jose “Joe” Correa Jr. Correa, who dedicated 32 years to the district and the City of Mission.

Superintendent Dr. Cornelio Gonzalez said the event was a big step for the district, and a historical time.

“This is an opportunity to honor a person who had a tremendous impact on a lot of students,” Gonzalez said.

MISSION – Genealogy enthusiast and Assistant Police Chief Robert Dominguez will be taking on a new role beginning March 1. He has been named interim police chief, taking over for current Police Chief Martin Garza who has been tapped by city fathers as interim City Manager.

Dominguez said he is excited to get this opportunity and looks forward to the challenge.

“Like anything, you never stop growing,” said Dominguez about what he hopes to learn as interim chief. “The day you close that book and stop reading is the day you stop learning.”

MISSION – Last Friday, the City of Mission dedicated Fire Station No. 3, at 1804 N. Shary Rd., in honor of former Mission City Councilman Celestino Ramirez. Ramirez passed away in 2009.

MISSION—Mission Consolidated Independent School District will hold a dedication ceremony tomorrow at 10 a.m., renaming of the district’s ag farm in honor of longtime agricultural sciences teacher Joe Correa. The new name for the farm is the Jose “Joe” Correa, Jr. Agriculture Science Lab.

The facility is located behind the MCISD Central Kitchen at 1201 W. Griffin Parkway.

PALMHURST – The City of Palmhurst will participate with over 300 other city and county entities throughout the state in the Great Texas Warrant Roundup. The city is looking to close about 2,200 warrants and citations between now and March 10.

City of Palmhurst will be mailing out approximately 2,200 unpaid warrants today, Feb. 15. The city will be seeking out those that have unpaid speeding tickets and other Class C penal law offenses, such as local theft or parking, driving and city ordinance violations. The city has outstanding warrants as far back as 2008.
