EDINBURG — Hidalgo County Commissioners, citing the need to work diligently at creating new economic opportunities, agreed to pay a $30,000 service agreement for Rio South Texas Economic Council at their last meeting of the year on Thursday.
Officials with RSTEC, including Mission Economic Development Authority’s President/CEO Pat Townsend Jr., who also serves as RSTEC’s treasurer, said the membership fee would help the organization conduct research and studies for future economic development.
RSTEC, a non-profit group formed last year, engages in marketing activities to generate opportunities that will result in economic expansion and diversification in Hidalgo, Cameron, Willacy and Starr counties.
Townsend, who said the group’s biggest action over the year has been in hiring Raudel Garza as RSTEC’s executive director, explained that the group has sought payment from Cameron County, but hasn’t heard back about the funding.
“We’re selling the community,” Townsend said of the group’s endeavors, adding that a lot of effort is concentrated in Hidalgo County with most of its municipality members from Hidalgo County.
In other action at this week’s special meeting, the Regional Mobility Authority asked county officials to work with the group on televising RMA meetings.
The payment of broadcasting RMA meetings on KMBH would be paid through the RMA’s budget, said RMA Executive Director Godfrey Garza. The group asked the county to assist in meeting with KMBH officials about the cost and probability of broadcasting the meetings.
“The more you put out to our constituents…is very important,” said Precinct 1 Commissioner Joel Quintanilla, who said he was in favor of broadcasting the meetings.
In other items, the court approved its regular meeting schedule for 2011. Starting in January, the court will meet at the Edinburg City Hall as a construction crew works on the Hidalgo County Administration building on Cano Road. Regular meetings were set for the fourth Tuesday of every month at 9:30 a.m. The Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1 will meet the same day at 9 a.m.blog comments powered by Disqus
