McALLEN — This Saturday state Rep. Sergio Muñoz, McAllen Mayor Richard Cortez and others will kick-off the Trees for Parks Program that will make the city "greener" and provide the essential benefits that only trees can bring to a community.
"We are on a mission to ‘green up’ our communities here in deep South Texas," said Muñoz. "Adding trees to the landscape provides many benefits to the environment, beautifies the area and in this case creates a degree of movement in the economy.”
Muñoz said he plans to duplicate the program in other cities.
In McAllen, plans are to have three tree planting events within the next few months, then annually thereafter. They also hope to create a program where citizens can donate trees and the city will plant and maintain the trees.
"We want people to think about trees to mark special occasions, perhaps to welcome a newborn to the world, to honor a loved one, a birthday, or to teach young children a valuable lesson on Earth Day,” he said. “Whatever the occasion or reason, we will all benefit from more trees.”
