Sheriff visits White House to discuss border security

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Wednesday, Sheriff Guadalupe "Lupe" Treviño met with senior administration officials at the White House including Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to talk about enhancing public safety and economic development in the U.S.-Mexico border region.

Treviño, vice chair of DHS’s Southwest Border Task Force, was joined by other sheriffs, police chiefs, and officials from the Southwest border who traveled to share their on-the-ground perspectives and brain storm ways to continue collaborating with state and federal agencies.

The delegation also discussed the urgent need for Congress to appropriate more money for local law enforcement jobs. Hidalgo County recently experienced their first official incident of cross-over violence from Mexico; an anomaly which Treviño believes can be prevented with the help of more federal resources.

“Violent crime in Hidalgo County has decreased by 43 percent,” Treviño said. “The $5 billion allocated for state and local law enforcement and first responders in the American Jobs Act would allow us to hire and train the officers needed to sustain reduced crime in our communities.”
