EDINBURG — A district court here will apply for close to $1 million in grant funding to assist local residents.

Those grants include the Court Efficiency Intervention Project, Victims Empowerment Project and Young Adult Re-Energizing Project. Judge Noe Gonzalez with the 370th District Court made the request to the Hidalgo County Commissioners’ Court on Tuesday.

“Each one of those grants has its pluses,” he said.

Gonzalez said the projects would allow the county to help offer public awareness on family violence and victims of crime.

The youth program will allow the court to work with juveniles who have been through the juvenile criminal system.

“This is a project I hold dear to my heart because we’re having a serious problem with the education of our children,” Gonzalez told the court, explaining the program would offer teens tutoring.

The grant for juveniles doesn’t require a match from the county, but Gonzalez explained the other two require in-kind matches, which include office supplies among other equipment the county may already have.

Gonzalez pledged to not take any financial resources from the county for the effort.

“I’m not interested in taking any more money from your budget,” he said, adding that he’d decline the funds if the county is required to match any of the funding.
