Magazine names State Farm Arena top in ticket sales

HIDALGO — A lead trade magazine for concert and events venues, Venues Today, has named State Farm Arena top in Texas for venues of its size.

The local arena qualified for the recognition among arenas that have capacity between 5,000 and 10,000 people.

Across the Lone Star State, for venues of all sizes, State Farm Arena, which has a capacity of 7,500 people edges out Houston’s Toyota Center, which has a capacity of 19,000 people, to claim the fifth spot, behind Houston’s Reliant Stadium, (71,500 capacity), Dallas’s American Airlines Center (20,000 capacity), San Antonio’s AT&T Center (18,000 capacity), and Austin’s Frank Erwin Center (16,800 capacity).

The rankings are for indoor concert venues and reflect gross ticket sales from January 1st through Dec. 31, 2011.

Since its doors opened in 2003 as Dodge Arena, the City of Hidalgo’s concert, sports, and events facility has ranked in the top spots in Texas and across the nation, even ranking in the top 100 venues worldwide for venues its size as per industry magazines such as Venues Today and Pollstar.

Owned and operated by the City of Hidalgo’s Texas Municipal Facilities Corporation, State Farm Arena has been the host of the Central Hockey League’s Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees since the arena’s inception, the NBA-D League’s Rio Grande Valley Vipers since 2007, and the Lone Star Football League’s Rio Grande Valley Magic since 2011. BorderFest, the city international festival named best in Texas for the past nine years and best in the world for four of the past six years, has called State Farm Arena its home since 2005.

Arena officials this week thanked the thousands of fans, sponsors and promoters that have come through its doors and have helped it grow.
