Aaron Gonzalez was charged with capital murder Friday morning. If convicted, Gonzalez could face the life in prison or the death penalty. He was also charged with aggravated robbery in connection to an attempted home invasion on Wednesday morning.
Kalifa, 23, was found early Tuesday morning at 2 ½ Mile Line and Moorefield roads with a gunshot wound to her neck. According to authorities, her body had not been at the location long before passerby’s reported seeing her body.
Family members told authorities Kalifa was picked up by a friend from a family member’s house at around 5 p.m. on Monday. Friends also reported last seeing her at about midnight.
It took investigator’s 44 hours of tracking her last steps and investigating leads to locate who she had last been with before arresting two with connections to the murder.
Authorities said an item found on Gonzalez at the time of the aggravated robbery was identified as belonging to Kalifa, leading to a more thorough investigation of Gonzalez.
Through the investigation, a search warrant was issued at a residence on the 1200 block of Clavel Street, off of Moorefield and 2 ½ Mile Line, less than two blocks from where Kalifa’s body was found. The weapon authorities believe to have been used in the murder, a .357 pistol, was found at the residence. The spent shell and other evidence was found at the residence and in an empty lot nearby.
Police said Gonzalez told them he and Kalifa had been in a verbal argument and he shot her as she tried to leave. Gonzalez told police he then disposed of the weapon at Zambrano’s house and took some of Kalifa’s belongings, said authorities.
A total bond of $600,000 was given to Gonzalez. Zambrano was given a $250,000 bond.
Also arraigned was the other suspect involved in the aggravated robbery, Jose Luis Garcia, 27. He was given a $100,000 bond.
Kalifa is from the McAllen area leaving behind three children from 7 months old to 6 years old and a long-time boyfriend.
At the arraignment family members said Kalifa was full of life and is now in heaven, in a better place. Family members also said they are happy with the outcome, that it happened so quickly.
